As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, the legend will be retold of how the Christian missionary Patrick banished all the snakes from Ireland.  However, zoologists say there never were snakes in Ireland, and historians suggest that the snakes refer instead to the druids, who had their own non-Christian religion.  Over time the Christian church incorporated elements of the druids’ traditions into its own religious practices in Ireland.

 

Maybe not anymore, but a recent discovery would suggest that they probably did. What appear to be the mummified remains of a fairy have been discovered in the Derbyshire countryside.

The Stonehenge that took 1000 years to build has long drawn pagans and druids to celebrate solstice rituals, but Stonehenge Aotearoa has just had its first ancient druid-led ceremony.

As the sun set last night at the Kiwi-style Stonehenge, built on a hill east of Carterton, druids from across New Zealand - along with Britain's Chief Druid, Phillip Carr-Gomm - gathered to be part of the ancient ceremony of Alban Elfed, the autumn equinox.
