I was born as I flew from the flint down through the air into the straw in a bowl many hundreds of years ago. The bowl was carried by a woman to a lamp and I have been tended by women ever since, a constant parade of ever changing and ever the same women, always 19 at a time.
There are 19 nights that the priestesses of Brighid keep watch over the eternal flame of Brighid on the 20th night it is said that the Goddess herself tends the flame. Tonight , Imbolc, is the 13th night. Tonight is my watch. Brighid I am tending your flame tonight. Please keep watch over me. So mote it
Flame keeping can mean many and various things, not the least of which is the honor we give to the Gods by keeping our tending commitment. But perhaps it's most important function is that it can activate our ancestral memory.
