Oak is the royal tree, called “most exalted tree” in the Ogham, and Chieftain Tree under ancient Irish Brehon Law. The twin oaks Gog & Magog stand guard at Glastonbury Tor. Druids worshiped in oak groves, and the word druid comes from the same root as the Gaelic word for “oak.” Oak is sacred to Brighid, whose sanctuary at Kildare was originally an oak grove. Kildare gets its name from cil dare, “church of the oak.”

Rowan is another name for Mountain Ash. It’s called “delight of the eye” in Ogham. It is sacred to Brighid whose three fiery arrows are said to be made of rowan. In Ireland rowan is known as the “druid’s tree.” Druids burned rowan before battles to receive messages and warnings from the Otherworld, and ancient kings were crowned under rowan trees.

I chose Willow Cill because I am Pisces. Water-loving Willow and Water-Sign Pisces have a lot in common. In his book, “The Ogham Year Wheel”, by Yuri Leitch, Yuri gives a lot of detail about the traditions surrounding the Willow Tree. What is Ogham, you may ask? It is an ancient form of Celtic script. In medieval manuscripts, the Ogham alphabet was memorised using lists of trees, animals and various other natural elements. The Tree lists contain twenty specific plants, which have come to be known as “The Ogham Grove”, each “tree” governing a fixed time in the Western Zodiac.
For instance, the fourth tree of the Grove is WILLOW (Salix species), known as Warden of the Early Spring. Irish name SAILLE (letter “S”). Its position within the Wheel corresponds with the Sun travelling from 3 degrees Pisces to 21 degree Pisces, the Mutable Water sign, traditionally governed by the planet Jupiter (more recently joined by Neptune). Willow “rules” approximately from 24th February to 12th March. Willow (aka Sally) is ruled by the Moon and the element of Water and is regarded as Female. Yuri writes: “Willow is said to be the tree most sacred to poets. Governed completely by Jupiter (Zeus to the Greeks) the Willow was known in Greek as HELICE and gave its name to Helicon, the abode of the Nine Muses, the daughters of Zeus and goddesses of sacred springs, music, poetry and inspiration.” On a more practical level, Willow has medicinal properties and it is one of the best tree species for making woven baskets, due to its flexibility. I use a Willow rattle in my shamanic work. Written by Veronica smith for Ord Brigideach on 24th August 2024 |

What is a cell or cill?
A cell (cill) in the Ord is a collection of 19 shifts. Each shift is for flame keeping, flame keepers are individual members of the Ord. Each shift is taken by one individual, hence there are up to 19 individuals in any cill. Each cill is usually named after a sacred tree. The 20th place in a cill shift is always taken by Brighid, though you are always welcome to support her.
