What It Means to Become a Member

Becoming a member of Ord Brighideach means stepping into the sacred work of tending Brighid’s flame. As a flame keeper, you will hold vigil once every 20 days — from 7pm on the evening your name appears on our calendar until 7pm the following day.

Please know: we never expect anyone to leave a flame burning unattended. If you must extinguish it while away, that is perfectly fine. Many members also use battery-operated candles when unable to tend an actual flame. With several Cills in our Order, there is always someone keeping vigil during those 24 hours, so you are never alone in this sacred rhythm.

🌿
The Five Steps to Join
  1. Visit the Flame Keepers page of our site and choose a vigil/shift in one of the Cills that does not yet have a name assigned.
  2. Fill out the form at the bottom of this page.
  3. Visit the Calendar page and mark your vigils in your own calendar.
  4. Take a few quiet moments with Brighid and make your Oath, as described below.
  5. Watch for a confirmation email from Tracy Savko, letting you know you’ve been added to the website. This email will also include a link to our private Facebook group, should you wish to join us there. (The group is for members only and remains completely private.

The Oath of a Flame Keeper

We ask that each flame keeper of Ord Brighideach offer an oath or prayer of commitment the first time they tend Brighid’s flame as a member of the Order. This vow need not follow any set words, for each of us comes to Brighid’s service by our own path, and so each oath will be uniquely spoken from the heart.

The tending itself is simple — only a small portion of each day is required — yet it is a sacred act. In keeping vigil, you weave your light into the greater mantle of Brighid’s flame, joined with sisters and
brothers across the world.

If ever you find that you cannot faithfully keep your vigil, we ask that you step aside with grace, passing your shift to another flame keeper. In this way, the flame is never neglected, and Brighid’s light continues unbroken.
