Ord Brighideach

“Lady of the perpetual flame and sacred wells,we seek you.”

Prayers & Invocations

Brigid Prayer

Brigid,
of the Sacred Oak.
Brigid,
of the Sacred Flame.

Sacred smith,
shape our lives
in the cauldron of destiny.

Ignite our creativity
forge our passions.

Spill forth
in the language of peotry,
falling leaves,
and hot metal.

Brigid,
Sacred Guardian,
Keeper of flame,
hope and hearts.

Enliven our work,
guide our steps,
inspire our message.

Thank You.

Sacred flame
Brigid we
invoke your name.

Holy fire

Honored one
I (we) am (are) your daughter(s).

Breath of life
Ancient eart
Upon your hearth
I claim my worth.

Living earth
Blessed breath
In your hands
through life and death.

Sacred touch
Holy hour(s)
In this space
we feel your power(s).

Healing water
Sacred flame
Breath of air
we call your name.

Goddess Brigid Spell Poem
Brigid of the mantles, Brigid of the hearth flame,
Patroness of prophecy,
My companion beloved is Brigid.
I shall not be slain,
I shall not be sworded,
I shall not be sworded,
I shall not be put in a cell,
I shall not be hewn,
I shall not be anguished,
I shall not be wounded,
I shall not be blinded,
I shall not be left bare,
I am under the shielding of good Brigid each day and each night.
Each early and late, every dark, every light.
Brigid is my protector, Brigid is my maker of song.
Brigid is my sword and shield, Brigid is my guide.
~So Mote It Be!~

By Starry 1 Night

Prayer by Rev. Taladin in both Latin and English
In nomine Brighid, flammae inextinguibilis, hanc lucernam accendo.
in hac nocte et omnibus noctibus,
nunc et semper.
Fiat voluntas mea.

I light this candle in the name of Brighid, the Ashless Flame.
May it be a beacon of light in times of despair and shine brightly when all other lights fade.
May your flame, oh Brighid, shine through all times.
Guide the departed and the lost and protect the living who do good in your name.
Breaker of chains, liberator of slaves, mother of lambs, may all those in need of your protection find a place under your green mantle.
On this day and on all days, in this night and in all nights, now and forever.
Let my will be done.

A Flamekeeper’s Prayer

I seek to know you -
to kneel at your feet with love,
honor you this night.
May my words serve you,
my devotion grow stronger,
my soul tend your Flame.
Brigid, this I ask:
shine your fire in the dark,
guide me home to you.

May the Flame of the Hearth
Warm and Cheer You

May the Flame of the Healer
Turn Away Disease and Ills

May the Flame of Inspiration
Teach and Enlighten Your Mind

May Brighid's Sacred Flame
Lead You Toward Her Light!

A lovely good morning to you O great Goddess of Dawn
May you bless the day ahead with warmth and joyful song

Invocation of Brighid

Invocation by Ellen Evert Hopman
(Old Irish translation by Alexei Kondratiev)

A Brigit, a ban-dé beannachtach
Tair isna huisciu noiba,
A ben inna téora tented tréna,
Isin cherdchai,
Isin choiriu,
Ocus isin chiunn,
No-don-cossain,
Cossain inna túatha.

O Brighid, blessed Goddess
Come into the sacred waters
O woman of the three strong fires,
In the forge,
In the cauldron,
In the head.
Protect us.
Protect the people.

Brigid of the Mantle, encompass us,
Lady of the Lambs, protect us,
Keeper of the Hearth, kindle us.
Beneath your mantle, gather us,
And restore us to memory.
Mothers of our mother,
foremothers strong.
Guide our hands in yours,
Remind us how to kindle the hearth.
To keep it bright,
to preserve the flame.
Your hands upon ours,
Our hands within yours,
To kindle the light,
Both day and night.
The Mantle of Brigid about us,
The Memory of Brigid within us,
The Protection of Brigid keeping us
From harm, from ignorance,
From heartlessness.
This day and night,
From dawn till dark,
From dark till dawn.

This picture was published by Dublin’s Cuala Press in the 1920s, reflects the Saint Brighid's association with the start of spring and the lambing season.

Picture

"Caim (encompassing), is a form of safeguarding common in the west. The encompassing of any of the Three Persons of the Trinity, or of the Blessed Virgin, or of any of the Apostles or any of the saints may be invoked according to the faith of the suppliant. In making the caim the suppliant stretches out the right hand with the forefinger extended, and turns round sunwise as if on a pivot, describing a circle with the tip of the forefinger whilst invoking the required protection. The circle encloses the suppliant and accompanies him as he walks onward, safeguarded from all evil, without and within. Protestant or Catholic, educated or illiterate, may make the caim in fear, danger, or distress...." So writes Alexander Carmichael in his notes to The Carmina Gadelica. This sanctuary or circle of protection may be made whilst invoking Brigit, or Bride (another version of her name). By encompassing yourself in this way you are enclosed by and in touch with her protective power wherever you are, wherever you go; safeguarded from harm - inner or outer, material or spiritual, physical or psychic. Below are two invocations you may like to use or adapt as you wish. I've based them on similar invocations in the Carmina Gadelica, and a piece in the Irish St Broccan's Hymn.

The
Caim of Bride

Be the compassing of Bride around me
Keeping me from ill and evil,
Keeping me from death and doom,
From malice and misfortune.
Be the fiery sword of Bride
Defending me from all black swarms.

Be the shield of blessed Bride
Protecting me from all sharp edges.
Be the cloak of gentle Bride
Encircling me.

Be the compassing of Bride around me,
Keeping me from hurt and harm,
Keeping me from wound and woe,
From darkness and despair.
Be the compassing of Bride around me
This day and every day,
This night and every night.
The Caim of Bride (2)
Be the cross of Bride between me and all bad spirits
That move invisible.
Be the cross of Bride between me and all ill,
All ill-will and ill-mishap.

Be the compassing of Bride around me,
From every spectre, every evil,
From every shame that harmful moves,
In darkness, in power to hurt.

Be the compassing of holy Bride
Shielding me from every harm,
Keeping me from every doom
Coming towards me this day,
Coming towards me this night.

Be the fiery sword of Bride
Defending me from all black swarms,
Be the shield of blessed Bride
Protecting me from all sharp edges,
Be the cloak of gentle Bride
Encircling me.

Be the compassing of Bride about me,
This day and every day,
This night and every night.

The above is an excerpt taken from Hilaire Wood's website Brigit's Forge.  In my research it looks as though Hilaire was a former member of Ord Brighideach and ran a cill of her own called the Olive Branch.  I love finding history like this of our Order.

This image and the prayer to the right, (which I translated), are on a Russian Wiccan website. I found it fascinating to see how many cultures are drawn to her. The words in the picture translate to: "The snake will come out of the hole on a brown day, even though there were three feet of snow on the slab of the lair".
Prayer to Brigid

(speak while touching and kissing Brigid's cross)

Bride, Bride, burning brightly in coal blackness.

Muse, Druidess, Wise Teacher, Chochma and Sophia-Wisdom, through whom everything exists.

Oh, Skillful! Oh Mysterious!

I touch your symbol and remember your wisdom, about your care in my life, which you have often consecrated with inspiration.

Both creativity and miracles blossomed thanks to you and followed them happiness.

Glory to you, Lady, The goddess is powerful. Glory to you, Brida!

BRIGHID OF THE MANTLES
Tira Brandon Evans

We rise today through,
the strength of heaven,
light of sun,
radiance of moon,
speed of lightning,
splendour of fire,
swiftness of wind,
gentleness of rain,
depths of the great pouring sea,
firmness of rock, stability of earth.
We are guarded and guided,
shielded and blessed,
By the three above us,
By the three below us,
By the three over us,
By the three under us,
By the three before us,
By the three behind us,
By the three to the right,
By the three to the left,
By the three within.
By the nine threes Are we learning*,
By the nine threes Are we journeying,*
By the nine threes Are we blessed.*
Brighid of the mantles,
Your mantle over me.
Brighid of the fair white hands,
Your hands in mine.
Peace of the gentle woman to you,
This day and forevermore.

*Learning, singing, dancing, journeying, praying, healing, (your choice.)

Brighid, lady of the sacred well,
Weaver of protection,
Source of inspiration,
I light this flame And tend it in your name.
May all who seek repose at your door
Feel comforted by the warmth and light
Of your sacred hearth.

May Brigid’s presence bring you comfort and peace,
May her flame warm your heart and hearth,
May her bright fires inspire your thoughts, words, and deeds.
May you be forged by your trials
And her strong hand into your most perfect self.
May her cool water heal and sooth your sorrows.
May her mantle protect you from all harm,
And her presence be a light to guide you through the darkness,
Now and always.
As it was, as it is, as it will be evermore.

Saint Brigid, you were a woman of peace.
You brought harmony where there was conflict.
You brought light to the darkness.
You brought hope to the downcast.
May the mantle of your peace cover those who are troubled
and anxious, and may peace be firmly rooted in our hearts and in our world. Inspire us to act justly and to reverence all God has made.
Brigid, you were a voice for the wounded and the weary.
Strengthen what is weak within us.
Calm us into a quietness that heals and listens.
May we grow each day into greater wholeness in mind, body and spirit.
